Il Comune di Livorno e l’associazione Carico Massimo presentano il terzo appuntamento di “Livorno in Contemporanea”, la piattaforma dedicata all’arte contemporanea della città.
Maria Thereza Alves e Jimmie Durham sono figure chiave dell’arte contemporanea internazionale. Dopo l’esperienza di un breve soggiorno a Livorno, Alves propone un progetto per il Mercato Centrale di Livorno e Durham per gli spazi esterni di Carico Massimo.
Maria Thereza Alves (San Paolo, Brasile, 1961) è un’artista che da anni realizza lavori site-specific sui temi dell’arte ed ecologia, delle storie locali e ambientali che coinvolgono botanici, archivi e comunità. L’artista ha proposto un progetto per Livorno che si concentra intorno al Mercato Centrale della città e i suoi frequentatori, attivando un processo di condivisione di conoscenza tra tutte le persone coinvolte. Venditori ambulanti, commercianti, ricercatori universitari, immigrati, rifugiati politici, cittadini livornesi hanno partecipato alla realizzazione di due videointerviste rispondendo alle domande: “Perché sei qui?” e “Qual è la tua pianta preferita?”. I video saranno installati all’interno degli spazi commerciali del mercato insieme una piccola pubblicazione frutto di ricerche sui prodotti agricoli che transitano attraverso il porto di Livorno. Un cuoco professionista realizzerà pietanze, combinando cucina tradizionale e ricette che manifestano l’influenza dei nuovi residenti provenienti da diverse aree del mondo. Il menu sarà servito al pranzo d’inaugurazione.
Jimmie Durham (USA, 1940) è artista, poeta, scrittore e attivista politico. “Practically Pinnacle” è il titolo della sua istallazione che sarà allestita nello spazio esterno degli ex Magazzini Generali di Livorno, dove ha sede Carico Massimo. Il titolo fa riferimento all’architettura, in particolare ad un elemento, il “pinnacolo”, che ha una funzione strutturale e contribuisce alla statica di un edificio, ma allo stesso tempo crea la possibilità di trasformarsi in decoro. L’opera sarà realizzata assemblando oggetti di recupero come ferro, legno, ghisa, materiali per l’edilizia. Un lavoro che, come suggerisce Durham “possa ricordare alle persone Luis Buñuel o una forma più elevata di Marcel Duchamp”.

The Municipality of Livorno and Carico Massimo Association present the third appointment of “Livorno in contemporanea”, a platform of the city devoted to contemporary art. Maria Thereza Alves and Jimmie Durham are key figures of the international art scene. After the experience of a brief stay in Livorno, Alves proposes a project for the Central Market of the city, while Durham for the external spaces of Carico Massimo.
Maria Thereza Alves (Sao Paolo, Brazil, 1961) is an artist that since many years has realized site-specific art works around the themes of art and ecology, of local and environmental stories involving botanists, archives and communities. The artist has proposed a project for Livorno that concentrates around the Central Market of the city and its regular visitors, activating a process of knowledge sharing between all the involved persons. Street vendors, traders, university researchers, immigrants, political refugees, native citizens, have all participated to the realization of two video interviews answering to these two questions: “Why are you here?” and “Which is your favorite plant?” The videos will be installed inside two counters of the market along a small publication resulting from a research of the agricultural products that traverse through the Port of Livorno. The opening day, a professional chef will realize dishes – combining local traditional cooking and new recipes reflecting the wider influence of recent residents in Livorno from different areas of the world – that will be served during lunchtime.
Jimmie Durham (USA, 1940) is an artist, poet, writer and political activist. “Practically Pinnacle” is the title of the installation that will be displayed in the outer space of the former General Warehouses of Livorno where Carico Massimo is housed. The title makes reference to architecture, in particular to one element, the “pinnacle”, which has a structural function that contributes to the stability of a building, but at the same time creates the possibility of transforming into décor. The structure is assembled using found objects like steel, wood, cast iron and construction materials. A work that, as suggested by Durham, can “remind people of Luis Buñuel or a more elevated form of Marcel Duchamp”.
