The use of medicinal and food plants in popular tradition of
Decimomannu (southern Sardinia)

RIASSUNTO
Con questo lavoro l’autrice presenta i risultati di una ricerca etnobotanica svolta nel territorio di Decimomannu, compresa l’Isola Amministrativa di Pranu Mannu, nel sud Sardegna.
Tutte le testimonianze raccolte durante le interviste condotte in campo sono state analizzate e poi confrontate con le informazioni già presenti in precedenti ricerche etnobotaniche.
Le piante utilizzate a scopo alimurgico, medicinale/aromatico, magico/religioso, artigianale e domestico si riferiscono a 74 specie, ascrivibili a 38 famiglie e 71 generi.
Per ognuna vengono citate le droghe vegetali più usate, le modalità e gli scopi d’utilizzo. Da questa analisi risulta che gli usi medicinali di alcune specie citate in questo lavoro sono molto interessanti in quanto insoliti rispetto alle notizie già note.
Con l’intento di documentare le tradizioni della medicina popolare nelle diverse realtà sarde, questo studio ha messo in evidenza come oggi sia ancora vivo questo tipo di patrimonio culturale che ha permesso di conservare e tramandare oralmente una vasta ricchezza di saperi. I rimedi naturali ai quali ricorrevano i nostri genitori, ereditati dall’esperienza dei nonni e degli anziani, sono parte della nostra memoria storica.
Queste informazioni, riguardanti il territorio di Decimomannu, si aggiungono alle numerose notizie riportate nelle ricerche etnobotaniche eseguite in passato. Questo permette di avere sia una completa conoscenza sugli usi delle piante nella tradizione sarda, sia di salvaguardare le testimonianze orali che, se non trascritte, rischiano di scomparire.
ABSTRACT
In this work the author presents the results of an ethnobotanical research carried in the territory of Decimomannu, including the Administrative island of Pranu Mannu, in southern Sardinia.
The testimonies collected during the interviews conducted in the field wer analyzed and the compared with the information already present in previuos ethnobotanical research.
The plants used for food, medicinal/aromatic, magicol/religious, artisanal and domestic purposes refer to 74 species, atrtibutable to 38 families and 71 genera.
For each one, the most used herbal drugs are mentioned, as well as the methods and purposes of use.
From this analysis it appears that the medicinal uses of some species mentioned in this work are very interesting because they are unusual compared to the news already known.
With the aim of documenting the traditions of folk medicine in the different Sardinian realities, this study has highlighted how this type of cultural heritage is still alive today, which has allowed a vast wealth of knowledge to be preserved and passed down orally. The natural remedies that our parents resorted to, inherited from the experience of grandparents and elders, are part of our historical memory.
This information, regarding the territory of Decimomannu, is added to the numerous news reported in ethnobotanical research carried out in the past. This allows us to have both a complete knowledge of the uses of plants in the Sardinian tradition, and to safeguard the oral testimonies that, if not transcribed, risk disappearing.
